Minor Works Grant Scheme

IT Equipment Qualifies under Minor Works Grant Scheme

The Department of Education has recently announced details of the Minor Works Grant Scheme, part or all of which can be used for the purchase of computers, iPads and associated IT equipment.

Under the revised scheme, funding will be made available to all primary schools for the school year 2017/2018 on the following basis:

  1. €5,500 basic grant plus €18.50 per mainstream pupil and €74 per special needs pupil on the rolls on the 30th September of the year prior to the issue of the grant. (The €74 rate applies to a special needs pupil attending a special school or attending a special class attached to a mainstream school)
  2. The grant will only be paid in future years as funding permits.

The funds being transferred to the schools must be spent on the physical infrastructure of the school or on items of furniture and equipment for educational use including IT related equipment. Works covered include:

  • improvements to school buildings and grounds (Items such as the replacement of windows, roof repairs, re-surfacing of school yard, re-painting and re-decorating, improving insulation standards and improving access for all qualify under this heading);
  • improvement or replacement of mechanical and electrical services;
  • the purchase of standard furniture and physical education equipment;
  • the purchase of floor coverings and window blinds;
  • the purchase of IT related equipment (Items such as computers, printers, overhead projectors and photocopiers qualify under this heading).

Schools need not apply to the Department for approval to carry out works or to purchase items covered by the scheme.

There is no application process associated with this Grant.


Phase 1: ICT Grant 2016/2017

Primary Schools:

Schools receive receive a lump sum of €2,000 per school.

In addition they will receive a per capita amount will be paid as follows:

  • €22.20 per mainstream pupil on the rolls on the 30th September of the year prior to the issue of the grant, in mainstream primary schools,
  • €26.60 per special needs pupil on the rolls on the 30th September of the year prior to the issue of the grant, in special classes attached to mainstream schools, and per pupil in special schools.
  • €24.50 per pupil on the rolls on the 30th September of the year prior to the issue of the grant in DEIS category primary schools.

The department are stating the grant is worth approximately €4,000 for a 100 pupil school and approximately €11,000 for a 500 pupil school at primary level.

Post Primary Schools:

Will receive a lump sum of €2,000 per school.

In addition they will receive a per capita amount will be paid as follows:

  • €31.90 per student on the rolls on the 30th September of the year prior to the issue of the grant in post-primary schools.
  • €35 per student on the rolls on the 30th September of the year prior to the issue of the grant in DEIS category post-primary schools.
  • €15.90 per person on the rolls on the 30th September of the year prior to the issue of the grant per student in fee-charging schools

The department are stating the grant to be worth circa €15,000 for a 500 student school, and over €27,000 for a 1,000 student school.

 What must the grant be used for:

  • Teaching computers/shared student computers. These may include desktop compupters such as iMacs, laptops such as MacBooks, tablets such as iPads or hybrid devices.
  • Projectors including short throw or ultra-short throw, long throw, interactive, or interactive flat screens (IFS).
  • Cloud based tools and applications to support learning.
  • Learning platforms – these are generally cloud based applications used to support the teaching and learning process


Phase 2: ICT Grant 2017/2018

Minister Richard Burton announced Phase 2 of ICT grant on 5th February 2018. 

The grant, which will be received by all schools built before 2014*, is allocated according to the size of the school plus a standard lump sum amount, is worth in excess of €4,100 for a 100 pupil school and almost €13,000 for a 500 pupil school at primary level.

At post-primary level, the Minister said that the grant is worth almost €18,000 for a 500 student school, and over €33,000 for a 1,000 student school.

*Note - schools built since 2014 would have received funding for ICT infrastructure upon set up. 

The rates payable are €2,000 per school plus €21.47 per mainstream pupil in primary schools, with additional per capita payments for pupils in DEIS schools, Special Classes and Special Schools. At post-primary, the rates payable are €2,000 per school plus €31.22 per student, with an additional per capita payment for students in DEIS schools.

This funding, along with the release of the ICT Grant Phase 1 in 2017 and Small Works grant at the end of 2017 - provides schools with a great opportunity to invest in class sets of iPads for students.
